Topic: DANGER OF IDLENESS Part 1
Text: 2 Samuel 11:1-4
1 It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.
2 Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold.
3 So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”
4 Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house.

Idleness is define as the quality, state, or condition of being lazy, inactive, or slothful. Idleness is a dangerous and deadly lifestyle for anyone who engages in it. For the purpose of this devotional we want to consider the danger of idleness in the family especially our children.

Some of the dangers of idleness in the home are:

  • SEED OF DESTRUCTION: Idleness can give room for the devil to sow seed of destruction in the family. God has not created human mind to be empty, it surely must be engaged with sometime. When you allow you children to be idle, devil takes advantage of this to work on their mind to wander around until it picks evil from the environment. King David was a typical example, from our text above. At a time when kings go to war, David was found idle in the palace until his eyes saw what was forbidden and planted a terrible seed of destruction in his family.
  • SEED OF REGRETS: When idleness plants seed of destruction in a life, home or family, it surely will bring about regrets. David would forever regrets what idleness brought into his life, family and kingdom because that single room of idleness birth the following in his life, family and kingdom according 2 Samuel from chapter 11-18
1, David committed adultery with Uriah’s wife
2, David plotted the death of Uriah and he was killed eventually
3, God cursed David for his sins and said sword will not depart from his family and that he will be disgraced publicly
4, Amnon, One of David’s sons lust after and raped his half sister Tamar (A daughter of David)
5, Absalom, one of David’s sons killed Amnon, his half brother in revenge for raping Tamar (Absalom’s sister)
6, Absalom later allied with Joab, David’s captain to overthrown his father David
7, Absalom disgraced his father publicly by having affair with his father’s concubines in the public in his father’s palace
8, Absalom died while he pursed after his father, David in battle.

Beloved, if you were to ask King David, he would tell you that he cursed the day he was idle and he regretted the day he saw an uncovered female object, so fight against idleness in your life and your home, especially your children. Get them busy with positive and moral things especially the things of God, remember an idle hand is the devil’s workshop. God bless you

PRAYER:
* Father, I destroy every seed of idleness in my life and family in Jesus Name.
* I will not live with the regret of idleness all the days of my life in Jesus Name
